Indecent Images of Children – Educating older children and young adults to stay safe online
This session will describe a UK approach to educating teenagers and young adults to keep themselves safe online, framing it in the context of wider relationships and sex education. A workshop session will follow which will explore an education campaign led by MCF and the Internet Watch Foundation. We recognise that older teens and young adults may access online pornography to learn about sex and relationship amongst many other reasons. This campaign educates and empowers young men who may unintentionally happen across indecent images of children (IIOC) online, by raising awareness of the law around these images and the ongoing harm caused to the child featured. It stresses the importance of reporting sexual images or videos of under 18s to the UK IWF Hotline. Breakout groups will allow participants to explore if any key educational gaps exist for a particular age group within their own jurisdiction and whether a similar awareness raising campaign would work to help increase reporting of IIOC and awareness of legislation and the provision of support available to victims.
